Interview mit Katja Billep

Liebe Frau Billep,

Vielen, vielen Dank.
Interview with Ms Billep
The school blog editorial team was pleased to welcome Ms Billep for an interview today. She is responsible for the renovation and expansion of our school and the construction of the FuU gym.
Dear Ms Billep, first of all, thank you for making time for us. We would like to ask you a few questions. Why did you become an architect?
Ms Billep: Actually, I am not an architect, but a civil engineer. I come from a "engineer family" – my father was also a civil engineer and ran a construction company – and I had holiday jobs on construction sites from an early age. I have been fascinated by construction sites since I was a child.
What obstacles are there in your profession?
Ms Billep: The financial side. You imagine something, put it on paper, and then usually something happens, so that the costs change a little. And then you have to redesign everything. So in the end, the biggest challenges – I wouldn't call them obstacles – are money, finances and bureaucracy.
What do you love most about your profession?
Mrs Billep: The completion, the growth of the building. Being able to experience the individual phases of work. You put something on paper and then you see the project grow. And when the building is then used by people as you imagined.
Why did you decide to support the shg in terms of planning?
Ms Billep: I have been accompanying the FuU for a very long time and applied for the shg project. I find this building very beautiful – and we looked for a long time for a suitable building for the new FuU school. This building, which now houses the shg, was formerly a factory owned by the Winkler family. There were many interested parties for the factory building, but Ms Winkler wanted a school to be established here. Personally, I find the history of the factory building very interesting and tried to ensure that the factory is still visible here and there in the design of the school. I hope I have succeeded in doing so.
What was/is the biggest challenge in renovating the SHG / building the gym?
Ms Billep: At the school building, it is working while the school is in operation, but this is going surprisingly well. Originally, we assumed that we could only work during the holidays. However, we were able to complete many tasks while the school was running, so we are well on schedule. The FuU gym presents us with the challenge of working with very limited space. The building is almost as large as the plot. Therefore, for example, we had to close the street, as otherwise we would have no space for machinery and building materials.
What do you like most about the building?
Ms Billep: The history of the building, because, as I said, it is not a new build but an old factory with a soul. You can still see that – we have preserved some elements of the industrial architecture and tried to introduce new ones, such as the ceilings.
(At this point, we learned that the panels on the ceilings in our building are called sauerkraut panels. And they really do somehow resemble sauerkraut.)
Would you do anything differently if you were to plan the shg / the gym again?
Ms Billep: Not really. Perhaps I would label the doors in the school differently, if at all, then with small cards. The surface of the doors is somewhat special, and putting up door signs is not good for the surface, which is meant to resemble old blackboards.
Is everything going according to plan?
Ms Billep: Always. The two construction sites are proceeding completely according to plan.
The gymnasium remains exciting. It is planned that it will be completed by Christmas. We can manage that if everything continues to go so well. The staircase has already been built. The construction itself is fascinating. You would have to see it at night – large transporters come bringing panels and beams. The exterior walls of the gym are to be made of wood, which will be plastered.
Sometimes the construction goes very quickly, as with the floor slab, for example. It was completed within a few days. Currently, we are planning the colour for the interior of the sports hall. We are undecided between green and a darker red. You are welcome to take a look at the design. Which colour would you prefer?
(Of course, we were thrilled to be included in the question of how the sports hall could look! Our clear favourite is the red colour.)
What do you wish for the SHG and gym?
Ms Billep: Energy, positive energy. So it is really important to me that you embrace the buildings with your mood and energy and that you can use everything as we intended.
I was very pleased that you wanted to do an interview with me. Thank you very, very much.
